Cable Management 101: A Calmer Desk in 20 Minutes

Braided cable coiled neatly on a desk

A messy desk is rarely a space problem. It is almost always a cable problem. The good news: you can fix most of it in one short session, and you do not need to buy a drawer full of accessories to do it.

1. Unplug everything

Start from zero. Pull every cable off the desk, untangle the pile, and set aside anything you have not used in a month. Dead weight is half the mess.

2. Give every cable a job

One cable for the phone, one for the keyboard, one spare for guests or gadgets. If a cable has no job, it goes in a box, not on the desk. Braided cables like our Link hold up better here because they do not kink when you route them around corners.

3. Route along edges, not across the middle

Cables should hug the back edge of the desk and come forward only where they are used. If your monitor sits on a riser, run the slack underneath it. The shelf doubles as a cable tunnel.

4. Anchor the ones you unplug often

Charging cables creep. A simple clip or a bit of adhesive cable holder at the desk edge keeps the tip where your hand expects it.

5. Hide the slack, not the cable

You do not need invisible cables, just calm ones. Coil extra length loosely and tuck it behind or under something with weight. Tight coils stress the wire and shorten its life.

Twenty minutes, no drama, and the desk stops shouting at you. If your current cables are fraying at the neck, that is the one upgrade worth paying for first: a braided cable costs less than lunch and outlives the phone you charge with it.
